Haha! Supposedly I’m not supposed to go swimming with stitches too much?? I even got roomed with doc, so I can’t get away with as much…
[He says this but he’s immediately going to go and fall in the canal later. It’s hopeless. That and his shit-eating expression says he’s still very bad at following any doctor’s or common sense recommendations. F.
At least he’s just chilling out right now for the most part. Also, casually pointing to the other side of the boat, where a white-tipped fin can just be spotted peeking over.
Local Shark Daemon is at least enjoying the canal.]
Oh. Right. [ guess who forgot suigetsu was on a cyoa already!! it was me, lisa, and therefore by proxy also rex! whoops. ] Well, at least you've got enough common sense to not make things worse for yourself.
[ Rex goes to sit down on the edge of the canal, in the process brushing up against a shard of Special Glass, sending them both into a memory. (from 9:48 to 11:30)
And then--as soon as Rex picks up the phone, the words go all gooey like the music they've been hearing all day in the city. There's a sense that it's instructions on how to get out, but the details fail to stick.
As they make their way out of the grates towards their escape, they wade through a lakelike section of the enclosure. The blond haired boy, Noah, breaks the silence.
"I wanted to tell you, before. But there was never a good time. Not--not that this is a good time, but--"
Rex shoves him. "Get away from me." He doesn't want to hear anything this--this liar has to say.
Noah stumbles and nearly gets his hand eaten by a carnivorous chunk of tree. "I wouldn't last ten minutes down here on my own!"
"Good." Rex is preoccupied with trying to reactivate his powers, but no luck. Despite the electrical sparks he conjures, his fists stay firmly human flesh. Great. Not only did Noah betray him, but now he's shorted out Rex's powers in the process.
"Look," Noah perseveres, "White hiring me, that's just how I met you. It doesn't mean I didn't really become your friend!"
"Stop," Rex whispers.
"No! I want to explain--" but then Rex clamps a hand over Noah's mouth to shush him. A gigantic mutated bird, like a cross between a turkey and an ostrich, creeps out from beyond some trees. It's massive and bulbous, and as Noah trips and splashes in the water, it immediately hones in on them and attacks. Rex, pinned, nearly gets his head bitten off, but the turkey is deterred by a wood plank to its head, courtesy of Noah. He offers Rex a hand to help him up, but Rex pulls himself up to his feet. Just because he saved Rex's life there doesn't mean anything. After all, he's still a spy. He's only here because White wants someone monitoring him.
They manage to make it to the equipment room whole, and there they arm themselves with tranq guns and taser spears.
"Just listen to me for a moment, okay?" Noah tries again, after Rex has given him the worse of the weapons. "You don't even know the whole story."
"Alright, what?" Rex shoots back. "Did White kidnap your family? Threaten to torture you?"
"It wasn't like that! He offered me a chance to help win the war! And, well, some money--"
Rex doesn't let Noah finish. His vision fills with red and before he knows it, he's decked Noah in the face. And then, the anger drains out of him, replaced by a kind of despair. Not only is Rex's first and only friend just doing it to spy on him for his boss, but all it took was some cash. Like Rex is worth nothing but a paycheck to him. Just a means to an end--like he is to White, to Providence, to everybody else around here.
He should've known better. Things were looking up...but why should they? Rex doesn't get to have these things. ]
These weird memory flashes are still pretty fresh, but a lot of them are kind of interesting peeks into other people's psyches -- between all of this and all of the odd buzz of the connection he's noticed (as soon as he woke up, really, hard not to), this sure is a week, overall.
So Suigetsu stays lounging in his boat, humming as he turns things over -- he doesn't seem especially shocked. Mostly thoughtful, blinking slightly between sunlight and the night of the memory.]
Hmmm. Your team sounds like a bit of a mess, huh.
[He's real good at this delicately approaching awkward memories thing.]
One of those groups that's all about friendship or something?
[ ...well. let's say this isn't his first memshare by now, but it's the first one that had to do with his own memories instead of someone else's. hmm! boy, that's awkward! ]
Not really. Kind of the opposite, actually--at first, anyway. They just threw all the weirdo agents together and said "make it work." But we get along alright now. We kinda had to, or else we would've strangled each other.
Noah...he wasn't part of that at all. He was just some kid I met outside one day, the first thing in my life that wasn't totally controlled by Providence. That's what I thought, anyway.
Hahaha! Sounds kinda like us, but minus the not strangling part.
[Said cheerfully???? This is how teamwork works, and somehow he seems more comfortable chattering about that than about uhhhh whatever power of friendship is all about. We're doing great.
Raising an eyebrow at the rest.]
Agents, huh... That explains the machine arms? I think?? [does it] Sounds like whoever this Providence is is way more sneaky than your spy guy.
Providence isn't a person, it's an organization. I'm an agent of Providence, and so's Noah. Technically. Even though he's like, totally untrained.
[ the rather loose, friendly expression on his face turns sour ] All the sneakiness came from White Knight--the guy who hired Noah to spy on me in the first place. He ran the whole show.
Sooo... like an intelligence unit? They're always eating their own.
[Let's hope there's nothing literal about that...!
There is absolutely no vore in Naruto, Suigetsu's snickering means you can trust this. He cocks his head, digesting this information about secret organizations... to be fair, like 80% of ninja organizations are secret organizations.]
You're sayin' this White Knight guy runs your organization and wanted some rookie to spy on you for kicks? Or just 'cause they think they gotta keep an eye on you?
Oh yeah, he wanted me under lock and key, 24/7. Kept me in a tiny closet of a room all the time, and I only got let out when they needed me to work. [ rolls his eyes ] Then he had the guts to get all mad about it when I kept breaking outta there. That's probably why he sent Noah to me. To "keep me in line" without me realizing it.
[Look, there are literal spies in it, how is it not at least partly secret!!
There's a snort, like this is also funny somehow -- though he also looks vaguely thoughtful about it. Hmmm.]
Haha!! Sounds like he was either afraid of you or just real paranoid, but that's what they always do with the ones they think'll go rogue or something, yeah? Was this guy real strong or something?
I'd say he's pretty strong, yeah. I mean, I've only ever fought him in his fancy power suit, but it's not like he's ever outside of it anyway. He built that thing to fight me in the first place. To put me down, if he ever needed to.
[Like, he assumes that there's something mechanical about a fancy power suit?? Maybe?? Why y'all gotta be from the parallel future with your newfangled things.....
Anyway it's a mutter around a toothy grin, curling lip and all unrepentant bloodlust.]
Sounds like somebody that'd be easier to put down if you weren't fighting with yourselves, huh? That's really all they are... just another hurdle.
I mean...weird machines are kinda the whole big deal on my world. Like, the big deal.
Anyway, White's...better, now. Still a huge jerk, but he'd rather save me than kill me now, so it's alright. Plus, he's way better than his replacement.
w2, monday
What, too good to get in the water yourself? Where's your buddy, anyway?
