Basically what I said. That someone opened up windows to a bunch of different worlds and left them open. The spectres came as punishment for their hubris.

A start for what, though? It's great info for like, knowing how we keep ending up in random places, not so much for keeping people from getting killed.

Maybe not, but if we find out more information, we might be able to figure out what these windows are and maybe that's a part of the key?
